Low Latency Product Suite

Latency (time delay) of an optical fiber link can be an important factor for many applications, especially in the financial sector. There are two main contributors to signal latency in an optical link:

  1. The time required to traverse the optical path between the transmitting and receiving terminals.
  2. The time required for electrical processing of the signal, such as O-E-O regeneration (in the case of long links), or the use of forward error correction (FEC) to reduce signal errors.

RED-C provides a portfolio of amplification products aimed at reducing latency of optical links by addressing both these contributors. This portfolio includes the following products:

Raman

UltraSpan Raman - By deploying this solution, the system OSNR is improved by as much as 7 dB, significantly reducing the need for FEC and/or O-E-O regeneration, and their associated latency. In addition, by providing distributed gain along the fiber span, the need for discrete amplification at the end of the span (and its effect on the optical path length) can be reduced or completely eliminated.

Power Booster UltraSpan Power Booster - This amplifier provides distributed gain at the beginning of each fiber span, reducing or eliminating the need for discrete booster amplifiers (and their effect on the optical path length) at the beginning of the span.

DCM-optimized EDFA DCM-optimized EDFA - This EDFA is optimized for use with zero-latency DCM modules (such as fiber Bragg gratings) at mid-stage, instead of high latency dispersion compensating fiber (DCF). The EDFA can be provided as a module, or in a managed 1RU package with the DCM integrated within.

Single Stage EDFA Single Stage EDFA – This specially designed EDFA provides all the functionality of a standard EDFA, with up to 70% reduction in the optical path latency.

RED-C’s low latency products are available as modules or as network interfaced units which can be integrated easily and rapidly within existing system designs. All products fully comply with Telecordia and NEBS standards and incorporate unique RED-C features such as laser safety mechanisms, uniform GUI and operating procedures, and multiple communication interfaces.
